About Problem Solving Heuristics
Singapore primary mathematics syllabus identifies eleven heuristics which are applicable to problem solving at upper primary level. "Heuristics" can be defined as methods or strategies that can be helpful in problem solving.
By combining these heuristics, it can become a powerful and easy way to solve a problem. Some examples of heuristics are listed below:
Use a diagram / model
Make a systematic list
Look for pattern(s)
Work backwards
Use before after concept
Use guess and check
Make suppositions
Restate the problem in another way
Simplify the problem
Solve part of the problem
Act it out
The most important reason to learn heuristics is that because they can help solve unfamiliar problems. Thus it is important to expose your child to the various problem solving heuristics. Besides knowing the heuristics, they should also know when to use them.
